Jennifer E.
Melvin, LCSW, CT
Jennifer
(LIC#SW6823) realized
“what she wanted to be when she grew up” at the age of 19 when
she received the “gift” of therapy for herself during a critical
life transition. At that time, she discovered the benefit of
having someone truly listen to and support her, and she knew
then that she wanted to be that someone for others.
Graduating Suma Cum Laude in 1995, 1997 and 1998 respectively,
she received Bachelor degrees in Psychology and Social Work and
a Master’s degree in Social Work, all from Florida State
University. Jennifer then officially entered the professional
field, counseling children and families with a variety of needs
including those with mental health diagnoses, adjustment
struggles and individual & family issues. She provided brief
support as well as ongoing long-term therapy for children (ages
2-17) and adults.
In 2000, Jennifer
began specializing in grief and loss, receiving numerous
certifications that support her area of focus including:
becoming a Certified Bereavement Facilitator, Certified Trauma
and Loss Specialist and Certified in Thanatology (the study of
death, dying and bereavement). Over the years Jennifer has
provided numerous trainings to professionals, caregivers,
children, families, organizations, schools and the general
community throughout Palm Beach and Broward County on grief and
loss/change and transition issues. Jennifer also provides
crisis support to individuals, schools and organizations that
are experiencing the anticipation of a change, loss or a sudden
death. On occasion, she also collaborates with local police
departments and other community agencies to provide her
expertise with children in grief and loss. Frequently, her
specialization in children is utilized to support families with
“using the right words” and explaining an anticipated change
such as a diagnosis, terminal illness or death. In addition,
she frequently supports organizations on how to make decisions
to include children during transitional times and how to support
themselves and each other through changes.
Jennifer
is also involved in the community on a larger scale, providing
her skills and leadership as Vice President and Committee Chair
of the Palm Beach County Coalition for Children and as a Board
member of the Palm Beach County ADEC (Association of Death
Education and Counseling). At this time Jennifer has written
and is pursuing the publishing of a children’s book to support
families in explaining death to children.
